Man found guilty of murdering 13-week-old baby
Jurors found Wharmby guilty after medical experts said Hunter’s head injuries matched a violent impact and investigators uncovered false accounts of the baby’s final hours.
On Thursday, October 29, 2026, a jury at Canterbury Crown Court convicted 24-year-old Tyla Wharmby of murdering 12-week-old Hunter Hodges following a majority verdict on both murder and grievous bodily harm with intent.
The fatal incident occurred on July 15, 2022, while Wharmby—who was not the biological father—cared for the infant overnight at their Margate home as Shannon Hodges slept.
Medical experts told the court Hunter suffered a 'severe direct impact' akin to a 'high speed motorcycle collision or a multi-level fall,' with post-mortem examinations revealing an older brain bleed up to five weeks prior.
Digital evidence showed Wharmby watched pornography three minutes before emergency services were alerted; jurors rejected his claim that he handed the unharmed child to Hodges, reaching guilty verdicts after 15 hours and 19 minutes of deliberation.
Wharmby will be sentenced at a later date by Mrs Justice Foster, with Detective Inspector Adam Marshall stating the verdict provides 'some measure of accountability' for the grieving family.
