Elderly Man Found Dead After Suburban Shootout with Police

Police responded to a family violence call where a 71-year-old man fired at officers before barricading himself; no officers were harmed during the incident, authorities said.

  • On Saturday at about 7:50pm ACT Policing officers attended a residence on Galloway Street in Isabella Plains to arrest a 71-year-old man who allegedly fired multiple shots at them on arrival.
  • Police said the visit was to arrest the 71-year-old man over alleged family violence earlier that day, and his partner is in hospital being treated for her injuries.
  • Authorities evacuated nearby residents and cordoned Galloway Street while AFP tactical response and bomb response teams plus specialist negotiators worked on the scene.
  • Found dead at about 11:50pm, the man was later located in the shed on the property, with an autopsy planned to determine the cause of death, police said.
  • Authorities have referred the matter to the Coroner, ACT Policing's Criminal Investigations branch, and AFP Professional Standards, confirming no police officers sustained any injuries.
