Man Drowns While Swimming Near Goldstream Falls on Vancouver Island
Bystanders and paramedics tried to save him after he went under while swimming, as B.C. records a summer spike in drownings.
- On Monday evening, a 27-year-old man died after drowning at Goldstream Falls near Victoria. West Shore RCMP reported the man went underwater while swimming near the waterfall and did not resurface.
- Bystanders immediately pulled the man from the water and began life-saving measures until BC Emergency Health Services and the Langford Fire Department arrived at the scene.
- Despite collective efforts, the patient died in hospital, said BCEHS paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites. One ambulance with advanced care paramedics and a supervisor attended the scene.
- A BC Coroner's report shows 40 accidental drowning deaths from May 1 to July 16 across the province, up from 26 during the same period in 2025.
- Langford Fire Chief Chris Aubrey warned swimmers not to underestimate Greater Victoria's lakes and rivers, which may appear calm but possess strong currents. This death marks the latest in a summer spike including a 13-year-old girl's drowning at Cultus Lake earlier this month.
