Man charged with assaulting Quebec RCMP officer during anti-smuggling operation
RCMP say the suspect allegedly rammed a patrol vehicle during a border intercept, injuring an officer and leading to charges of assault and dangerous operation.
On Thursday, the RCMP charged Aaron Baringue, a 36-year-old patrol officer with the Champlain Integrated Border Enforcement Team in Quebec, with breach of trust and obstruction following an investigation into an alleged unauthorized border crossing.
In September 2024, Baringue allegedly drove to the United States while off-duty to retrieve a family member, then transported them to an unguarded path near St-Armand, Quebec, for illegal entry into Canada.
The RCMP's Special Investigations Unit led the case with support from the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection after authorities received reports from U.S. officials about the crossing.
Suspended from duty since the incident, Baringue is scheduled to appear at the St-Jean-sur-Richelieu courthouse on July 20 to face the charges.
Marie-Pierre Guertin stated, "This was a very rigorous investigation," emphasizing the force treated the matter like any other case involving Criminal Code charges without special treatment for the officer.
A Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) patrol boat was hit by the vehicle of a suspected smuggler, who was transporting migrants illegally across the border with the United States. The driver was arrested.
