Man charged after 'priceless' Egyptian artefacts stolen from Australian museum, police say

A 52-year-old man was charged after police recovered four priceless Egyptian artefacts from a museum break-in, with items verified by the British Museum.

  • A suspected burglar smashed a window about 3am on February 13, 2026, at the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology in Caboolture and stole four Egyptian artefacts.
  • Officers from the Moreton North Property Crime Taskforce are investigating the suspected break-in at The Abbey Place property, Caboolture, and Queensland Police Service have released images of the stolen artefacts to seek public help.
  • Four artefacts were reported stolen, including a gilt cartonnage mask, figurine of a cat, ancient jewellery, and a statue and bust.
  • After the theft, the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology reopened with a limited display while Joel Stephens called the loss `devastating and heartbreaking` and said retrieving the artefacts is `all we care about`.
  • Anyone who spots the artefacts for sale on Facebook Marketplace or eBay should contact Crimestoppers immediately, and Queensland Police Service investigators urged those with information about the persons involved to come forward.
