Man believed to be swept away by the Columbia River: police

Search teams using boats and drones have not found the man, and police say there is a high likelihood he drowned.

  • On Sunday, a man went missing in the Columbia River near Castlegar, with Castlegar RCMP stating there is an "unfortunately high likelihood that he has drowned."
  • Officers responded to multiple reports of a lone man in distress at approximately 9:30 p.m., with witnesses reporting seeing him being carried downstream by the current, said Sergeant Monty Taylor of the Castlegar RCMP.
  • Castlegar Search and Columbia Search teams used boats and drones to scour the area, while a backpack believed to belong to the man was found along the shoreline.
  • The man has been "tentatively identified," but Taylor said police will not release his identity until he is found.
  • Anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to contact the Castlegar RCMP at 250-365-7721.
