Man Arrested After Bus Hijacked at Knifepoint in Omagh

Passengers were allowed off the bus, and one man was taken to hospital after collisions and property damage during the pursuit, PSNI said.

  • On Saturday, a man in his 30s was arrested after hijacking a Translink Goldliner bus at knifepoint in Omagh. Police received the report shortly before 1pm, initiating a pursuit that ended in Strabane.
  • The hijacker allowed passengers to disembark but kept the driver on board, fleeing toward Newtownstewart. PSNI officers pursued the vehicle along the A5, passing through Victoria Bridge and Sion Mills during the high-speed chase.
  • Collisions involving the stolen bus damaged property and struck a police car during the pursuit. One man was hospitalized for injuries, and the Fountain Street and Drumallagh areas of Strabane remain closed to the public.
  • Police apprehended the suspect in the Head of the Town area of Strabane, where he remains in custody. Detective Inspector Winters appealed for footage, asking witnesses to contact the PSNI at 101, quoting reference 624.
  • Translink is assisting the PSNI with their investigation, including use of onboard CCTV footage. The operator urged anyone with information to contact police or Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
