Man allegedly beat elderly parents, set home ablaze, fled as they called out for help
Darius Hazard faces murder and arson charges after fatally beating and burning his elderly parents’ home during a sudden loss of temper, officials said.
- On November 24, a fire destroyed the Hazards' Francis Street home in North Adams after a neighbor reported it at 7:11 a.m.; Darius Hazard, 44-year-old suspect, confessed to assaulting his parents and setting the fire and was arraigned on arson and murder charges on November 26.
- When questioned, Hazard reportedly said 'I guess I snapped,' after telling law enforcement his mother had fallen multiple times between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. and that he became 'really, really angry' helping her, authorities say.
- After the assault, authorities say Hazard allegedly threw items including a small fan, grabbed a knife, retrieved gasoline and a match, then set the house ablaze as a neighbor reported the fire at 7:11 a.m. and firefighters found the couple inside.
- First Assistant District Attorney Marianne Shelvey said the case has deeply affected the community and prosecutors are holding Hazard without bail as he awaits December 29 court appearance.
- Neighbors described the Hazards as a pillar of the community for decades, noting Venture Hazard's scoliosis and advanced arthritis and the suspect's reported emotional distress and that he 'snapped.
