Man Charged After Allegedly Stolen Caravan Crashes with Kids Inside
The 59-year-old man faces charges after towing a caravan with three children inside and crashing it; all children escaped unharmed, police said.
- A 59-year-old man allegedly hooked a caravan to his 4WD at a Glenrowan Drive property, Tallai, and towed it off-road where it crashed with three children inside at 5.30pm Tuesday.
- After an argument at the property, neighbours said the man had recently rented a driveway spot to the 40-year-old woman and her children, who were not related to him.
- He allegedly used a single ratchet strap to tow the caravan about 80 metres down a hill, where it gained speed and crashed; the 40-year-old mother then rescued her three children aged 7, 5 and 2 through a skylight, and paramedics assessed them as uninjured.
- Police took the suspect to hospital under police guard and then to Broadbeach police station, where detectives photographed the crashed caravan before his expected court appearance Wednesday.
- The family's female rottweiler sustained leg and head injuries after being run over as detectives inspected the badly damaged SUV and crashed caravan near a house half destroyed last year.
