Mama grizzly bear attacks 2 hikers, hospitalizing both people
Both hikers were hospitalized in stable condition after a defensive attack by a mother grizzly bear protecting her two cubs, officials said.
- On October 12, two hikers were seriously injured after encountering a female grizzly bear with two cubs on Farm Cabin Trail near Pass Lake in the McGregor Mountain area.
- Following an investigation, the COS Predator Attack Team determined the sow's actions were defensive and said no action will be taken against the bears due to the incident's location.
- According to an Oct. 14 update, both hikers were transported to University Hospital of Northern British Columbia and remained in stable condition while recovering.
- The trailhead remains closed, with posted signage warning of bear activity, and people are asked to respect the closure and avoid the area.
- Authorities urged hikers to stay alert, make noise, travel in groups and carry bear spray, and as of Oct. 15 no other attacks had been reported.
