The high value of Portugal indicates that forests are producing very new biomass and indicates an option for fast growth species, such as eucalyptus and pineapple.
Eurostat places it in front of Denmark and Ireland on the evolution of the stock of wood. The Europe-wide strategy for 2030 wants to boost protection, restoration and recovery and support forest bioeconomy within sustainability limits.
Malta is the only country in the EU with no forest growth
According to the latest Eurostat statistics, Malta is the only country in the EU with zero first growth in the year 2023. The EU country with the highest forest growth is Portugal with an increase of up to 11%. Portugal was followed by Denmark with 7.6% and Ireland with 6.8%.
