Police: Malnourished Toddler Found Dead Was Eating Drywall, Diapers

Police said the 2-year-old weighed about 15 pounds, and two other children were removed from the home after officials found severe neglect.

  • On April 3, authorities arrested Trevor Reichard-Hayes and Katherine Carter of Tell City, Indiana, charging both with murder and child neglect following the death of their 2-year-old son, Erik Reichard.
  • Police responding on March 31 found Erik dead at 15 pounds, half the expected weight for his age, in living conditions officers described as "very poor" with feces, insects, and scattered diaper and drywall debris.
  • Evidence showed Erik had over 40 sores or bug bites, and autopsies found diaper material and drywall in his system, which police suspect resulted from severe hunger during extended neglect.
  • Two other children were removed from the residence and placed into the care of the Department of Child Services, while Reichard-Hayes and Carter remain in the Perry County Detention Center.
  • Tell City Police Chief Derrick Lawalin described the case as "beyond what we see often" in the community, as Reichard-Hayes and Carter await upcoming court appearances on the charges.
