19-Month-Old Cheetah Cub Dies of Gunshot Injuries in MP's Kuno National Park; Pellets Extracted From Body
The State Tiger Strike Force is investigating how the 19-month-old cheetah was injured as veterinarians treat it and officials examine possible human involvement.
On Sunday, a 19-month-old male cheetah cub from Kuno National Park was found injured in the Morena Territorial Forest Division. The cub died, marking the first such incident in India's reintroduction project.
Morena has recently been the focus of a major investigation into leopard poaching, with an alleged interstate network linked to the killing of at least 10 leopards earlier this year.
Chief Wildlife Warden of Madhya Pradesh Samita Rajora dispatched the State Tiger Strike Force on Monday to investigate the shooting, examining potential poaching or human-animal conflict.
Following surgery, Dr. Shobha Jawre from the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry confirmed pellet injuries caused the death. "The cub is not alive anymore," Rajora stated on Monday.
As cheetahs venture beyond Kuno, protecting the 59 cheetahs in India remains a challenge, complicating safety efforts across multiple forest divisions sharing responsibility for the wider landscape.
The 19-month-old male cub of Kuno's female leopard, Nirva, died on Tuesday during treatment. He was found injured in the Morena forest on October 25. The cub is suspected to have been shot, although the Forest Department has not officially confirmed this.
