Maldives opposition candidate Mohamed Muiz wins the presidential runoff, local media say
Mohamed Muizzu, a pro-China candidate from the Progressive Alliance coalition, has won the Maldives presidency with over 53% of the vote, in a historic defeat for the liberal democratic government.
Muizzu has called for better relations with China, aligning with the Maldives' move towards the Belt and Road Initiative under previous president Abdulla Yameen.
The election marks the first time Maldivians have voted out a liberal democratic government in favor of an authoritarian challenger since their first multi-party elections in 2008.
