(UPDATED) Malaysia's Economy Grows 6pct in Q2, Beats Advance Estimate
Strong export growth, steady household spending and sustained investment offset risks from the Middle East conflict, while agriculture contracted 3.7%, officials said.
On Friday, Malaysia's economy expanded 6% in the second quarter, surpassing the 5.8% official advance estimate as stronger export growth and steady household spending offset Middle East conflict risks.
Robust export growth, steady household spending and sustained investments cushioned the Southeast Asian economy, with tech investment and artificial intelligence infrastructure contributing to firm external sector performance.
Manufacturing rose 7.3% and mining grew 9.2%, while credit, debit card and e-money spending surged 17.1% with aggregate wages increasing 5.5%, reflecting strong consumer activity.
BNM Governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said 2026 growth was likely around 5%, the upper end of the central bank's 4 to 5% forecast, while maintaining the benchmark rate at 2.75% for the sixth consecutive meeting.
Headline inflation is projected to average 1.5% to 2.5% in 2026, with external cost pressures expected to remain contained through fuel subsidies and government assistance despite higher global commodity prices.
