- On Sunday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim introduced measures to address rising living costs, restoring the RON95 petrol subsidy quota to 300 litres per month and diesel to 400 litres per month effective September 1.
- The government previously reduced the RON95 quota to 200 litres per month earlier this year amid a surge in global crude oil prices caused by the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
- Anwar also unveiled a government artificial intelligence program for Malaysians aged 18 to 30 years, providing free access to tools from Google and Alibaba Cloud alongside increased funding for schools and micro-financing facilities.
- These measures follow second-quarter gross domestic product growth of 6%, while the government will channel funds seized from anti-corruption proceedings into education and healthcare, raising the e-invoicing revenue exemption threshold to 3 million ringgit.
- Amid recent regional election defeats, Prime Minister Anwar warned he may call for snap polls if administrative divisions widen, noting state elections serve as voter sentiment indicators for the general election required by early 2028.
