Malaysia to hold meetings on security threats, PM says

Authorities are strengthening protections for strategic sectors and financial institutions after intelligence agencies flagged foreign threats and cyber risks.

  • On Tuesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addressed the Dewan Rakyat, warning Malaysia must prepare for global security threats. "We must not think that these threats are far away," he said, citing instability across Europe, the Middle East, and Yemen.
  • Escalating tensions in the Middle East and Yemen, developments in the Red Sea, and concerns about Israeli intelligence operations in Phuket and southern Thailand prompted the alert. Anwar cited these foreign threats as potentially affecting Malaysia's economic stability and national interests.
  • Cyber incidents have disrupted systems globally, including Belgium's national tax portal, Denmark's central population registry, and the United States Federal Election Commission. A Japanese intrusion exposed personal records of more than 100,000 police personnel, illustrating the scope of threats.
  • The National Security Council convened on Monday to assess implications for Malaysia. The Chief Secretary to the Government and Bank Negara Malaysia governor scheduled separate meetings on Tuesday with relevant departments and financial institutions.
  • To ensure readiness, the government is strengthening protection for energy, transport, finance, and food supplies while improving coordination among security forces. Several countries, including Canada and members of the European Union, advised citizens to maintain emergency food supplies for three to 10 days.
