Hyundai Recalls Nearly 300K Vehicles for Seatbelt Issue

Dealers will inspect the anchors free of charge after Hyundai said the defect could raise crash injury risk in about 290,000 vehicles.

  • On Monday April 6, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Hyundai Motor America is recalling 294,128 vehicles due to a defect where a "detached seat belt anchor" could "not adequately restrain the seat occupant, increasing the risk of injury in a crash."
  • Improperly produced seat belt buckles combined with slow insertion of the seat belt tongue plate may prevent the buckle from fully latching; the NHTSA reported that "out of specification" components caused interference within the latch channel.
  • Affected models include certain 2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6, 2023-2026 Genesis G90, and 2024-2026 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid vehicles; dealers will "inspect and reinforce or replace the seat belt anchors, as necessary, free of charge."
  • This latest safety measure follows a September recall of around 568,580 cars due to potential issues with securely fastening seatbelts, marking Hyundai's second major recall in less than a year.
  • Separately, sales of the 2026 Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims were halted last month over safety concerns following the tragic death of a 2 year old girl who was pinned down by a power seat in her family car.
