Widnes fire RECAP as major incident declared with crews tackling 700 tons of cardboard ablaze at recycling facility
Crews are battling 700 tonnes of waste cardboard as residents are told to keep windows and doors closed.
On Monday, Cheshire Fire crews responded to a large fire at a recycling facility in Widnes, which officials declared a "major incident" after thick black smoke plumes became visible for miles around.
Inside a single-storey building measuring approximately 50m by 50m, the blaze involves around 700 tonnes of waste cardboard, forcing firefighters to tackle the flames from the exterior due to collapse risks.
Around 20 fire engines from Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Lancashire are on-site with a foam tanker and high-volume pump, as Cheshire Police manage traffic in the vicinity.
Road closures are in place on Everite Road, Hale Road, and Ditchfield Road, while residents and businesses are advised to keep all windows and doors closed to prevent smoke inhalation.
Firefighters have confirmed that all persons are accounted for and no casualties have been reported, as emergency teams remain at the scene managing the blaze.
