Maharashtra declares drought in 305 talukas, announces Rs 5,000 Diwali bonus for farmers: Fadnavis
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that drought-hit farmers in Maharashtra will receive Rs 5,000 each before Diwali as an advance on central drought relief assistance.
Breaking a 25-year pattern, the state declared drought across 265 of its 358 talukas in 32 districts this October to expedite relief for farmers facing a difficult festival season.
Managing the water crisis, the government is monitoring tanker supplies via GPS and has cut 16,000 illegal connections as water tables in affected regions dropped below 3 meters.
The Cabinet decided on immediate state-funded relief today; standard central government procedures for drought assistance would have delayed aid past Diwali, necessitating the advance payout.
Fadnavis also recognized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25 years as head of government, with the Cabinet passing a resolution acknowledging Modi's infrastructure and irrigation contributions to Maharashtra.
