Ghana to Evacuate 300 Citizens From South Africa over Anti-Immigrant Protests

- Xenophobia has long plagued the country, with violent clashes erupting in 2015, 2016 and 2019. Tensions are fueled by 30 percent unemployment, while thousands of South Africans continue protesting to demand mass deportation of undocumented foreign nationals.
- Ahead of Wednesday's planned protest in Durban, the Ghanaian embassy in Pretoria advised nationals to close businesses and avoid public gatherings. Ghana and Nigeria recently summoned South African envoys, citing a "serious risk to the safety and wellbeing" of Africans.
- South African President Cyril Ramaphosa described the recent "protests and criminal acts directed at foreign nationals" as "isolated acts of criminality." Presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya added these are merely "pockets of protest," permissible within the constitutional framework.
- Home to more than three million foreigners, or about 5% of the population, South Africa faces warnings from nations like Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho and Zimbabwe. Officials maintain the government has "nothing to hide" regarding the disputed incidents.
