France to Build New Aircraft Carrier to Boost Its Capacities as a Maritime Power
The new carrier will support 30 fighter jets and 2,000 sailors and is part of France’s plan to double defense spending by 2027, officials said.
- On Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron gave the official go-ahead to replace the Charles de Gaulle, telling French troops the decision was taken this week.
- In line with defence planning, Emmanuel Macron, French President, said `In line with the last two military programming laws, and after a thorough and comprehensive review, I have decided to equip France with a new aircraft carrier` to boost France's maritime power.
- The new aircraft carrier will measure 310 meters, displacing about 78,000 tons and carry all French Rafale M fighter jets, Macron said.
- The program will mobilise French suppliers, mostly small- and medium-sized businesses, and Emmanuel Macron pledged personal guarantees with a shipyard visit next February; cost estimates are about 10 billion euros, while Macron announced 6.5 billion euros in extra military spending.
- The decision positions France to deploy the new carrier for heavily armed, long-range missions repeatedly, despite it being smaller than the USS Gerald Ford, supporting a reservists target of 80,000 by 2030.
