Malaysia PM Anwar’s Ex-Aide to Face Probe over US$152,000 Bribery Allegations
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will summon key figures in a probe after RM629,000 was allegedly paid for personal expenses linked to mining projects, officials said.
- On Wednesday, the Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission announced it will summon Albert Tei, businessman, and Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin for questioning over alleged payments of RM629,000.
- Shamsul Iskandar resigned as senior political secretary, a post held since December 2022 and trusted by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim; the allegations surfaced on Tuesday evening hours after his resignation.
- Local reports say Tei spent funds on personal items and property work, alleging home renovations, cigars and tailored suits, plus renovations and furnishings for two properties linked to Shamsul Iskandar.
- Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the MACC is free to probe and accepted Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin’s resignation, while Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will summon both men and urge no public speculation.
- Ahead of the Sabah regional election on Saturday, Albert Tei previously faced June corruption charges over payments linked to mining licences in Sabah and claimed he could recoup money channelled to politicians.
