Lyft Buys Gett's London Taxi-Hailing Operation
The deal gives Lyft the majority of registered black cab drivers and enterprise clients in Greater London, and could nearly double rides across the capital.
- On Thursday, Lyft announced an agreement to acquire Gett UK, positioning itself as the leading app for black cabs across Greater London with a majority of registered drivers on its platform.
- The deal advances Lyft's strategy of "expanding out in more locations and up into more high-value segments" after years of focusing primarily on North American markets. This marks the company's continued international push.
- Gett brings deep B2B relationships with major corporations; drivers pass the world's toughest taxi exam, learning 25,000 streets and 20,000 landmarks, said Thomas Zimmermann, CEO of Freenow by Lyft. Pick-ups occur in less than 4 minutes from Central London.
- Once the acquisition closes in the coming weeks, Gett's team will transfer to Freenow by Lyft. Matteo de Renzi, CEO of Gett, stated he is confident the team will reach "new heights."
- Lyft already provides software for Santander Cycles in London and will test autonomous rides with Baidu later this year, making it a comprehensive mobility platform offering both human-driven and autonomous options in the city.
