Brazil’s Free TV and Radio Ads Begin as Lula, Flávio Bolsonaro Vie for Votes
Broadcasters must reserve 14 minutes a day for nearly 1,000 ads as Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro seek to sway voters before Oct. 4.
- On Friday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula and Sen Flávio Bolsonaro began airing free campaign advertisements on radio and television ahead of the Oct. 4 election. Broadcasters must reserve 14 minutes daily for these ads.
- Unlike other systems, Brazilian campaign ads are free, with airtime distributed based on coalition size and lower-house representation. Lula receives 5 minutes 31 seconds while Bolsonaro's party gets 4 minutes 20 seconds.
- Maria Izabel Pecanha, an 84-year-old retired history teacher from Rio, says many voters like her prefer traditional media over social platforms. Communications professor Bruno Pompeu said the system "defends the democratic principle of equal treatment."
- Political consultant Thomas Traumann expects a "dirtier" campaign than 2022, noting that Bolsonaro's shorter airtime reflects his struggle to unify parties unlike his father, President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year sentence.
- Ricardo Matta, a business professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation, anticipates campaign funds will shift toward social media, producing ads that are "less artificial, more natural." A runoff on Oct. 25 would grant equal airtime to both candidates.
