Lufthansa trims outlook on fuel costs after third-quarter profit meet expectations
The airline said fuel costs will reach €9.3 billion and operating profit will fall to €1.7 billion to €2 billion as demand stays strong.
On Tuesday, German airline group Lufthansa reported a third-quarter operating profit of €1.4 billion , exceeding analyst estimates as sales advanced 9 per cent to 12.24 billion euros.
Chief Executive Carsten Spohr said strict cost discipline helped offset approximately 543 million euros in increased fuel costs, while strong demand for premium tickets on routes to Asia and North America boosted yields 7 per cent.
While the cargo unit tripled its operating profit and maintenance units grew more than 50 per cent, the flagship airline faced high expenses, crew walkouts, and unprofitable short-haul operations that offset gains elsewhere.
Spohr trimmed the 2026 operating profit forecast to between €1.7 and 2 billion from an earlier range of €1.7 to 2.2 billion, cautioning that 2027 will be 'another year of transformation.'
Lufthansa is shifting capacity to lower-cost carriers Discover and City Airlines while expanding its portfolio after winning a bidding war against Air France-KLM to acquire a minority stake in Portuguese airline TAP.
Lufthansa, Europe's leading air transport group, was able to offset the energy bill boosted by the kerosene outbreak and recorded a sharp increase in its third quarter results over a year thanks to cost containment and high demand for flights.
