‘We Escaped From Hell’: Hundreds of Ukrainians Return From Russian-Occupied Town
- On Saturday, residents evacuated from the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky arrived in Ukraine following a complex, multi-leg humanitarian mission brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV.
- Since commercial supply lines collapsed in May, Oleshky, located on the Dnipro River, has faced catastrophic conditions forcing remaining residents to survive by eating grass and dogs while enduring relentless shelling.
- A localised truce running from Tuesday through Sunday evening enabled the evacuation from a town where officials estimate only 1,700 to 2,000 residents remained from a pre-war population of roughly 24,000.
- Accompanied by Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets, the group arrived at a border reception point where relatives reunited with elderly family members, some requiring wheelchairs or stretchers.
- Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova confirmed the mission has concluded, noting that while some residents relocated to Russia, others chose to stay in Oleshky despite lacking gas, electricity and running water.
