Lower Mainland Harness Driver Killed in Crash
A misstep by one horse triggered the chain-reaction crash, and a GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $45,000 for Knight's family.
On Sunday, harness racing driver Scott Knight, 52, of Langley, died following a multi-horse crash at Desert Park Raceway in Osoyoos, prompting organizers to cancel the remainder of the day's programming.
A horse's misstep during the race triggered the multi-horse crash as following racers could not stop in time, according to track operators and Western Canada HorseRacing Association president Kelly MacMillan.
Five ambulances and an air ambulance arrived at 3:33 p.m. Sunday; Brian Twaites, BC EHS paramedic public information officer, reported two others were transported to Penticton hospital in serious but stable condition.
Close friend Jocelyn Giesbrecht launched a GoFundMe page to support Knight's wife, Lindsay, and their five children, with donations nearing $45,000 to help cover funeral expenses and reduce financial pressure.
MacMillan expressed deep sorrow, stating, "Scott was part of our family, and I can't begin to describe how we are feeling," as the racing community grieves the loss of the veteran driver and trainer.
