'Lonely and isolated' mum killed disabled daughter and herself
Coroner found Martina Karos, overwhelmed by caregiving and mental health struggles, deliberately caused carbon monoxide deaths of her disabled daughter and herself.
On Thursday, January 15, area coroner Peter Sigee delivered his verdict that Martina Karos died by suicide and Eleni Edwards was unlawfully killed during inquests at Bolton Coroner's Court this week.
Ms Karos had been treated for anxiety and depression for several years and reported a sharp downturn with suicidal comments at the end of 2023, while Eleni was placed on a child protection plan in January 2024.
Post-Mortem examinations showed both died from carbon monoxide toxicity, and paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene after emergency services forced entry on Monday, September 23, 2024, at South Radford Street, Kersal, Salford.
The coroner stated he could not identify any failings in care and declined to issue a prevention of future deaths report, with lawyers saying professionals had not 'caused or contributed' to the deaths.
Loved ones urged that the deaths change how disabled children and their parents are perceived, despite focused support, and signposted Samaritans on 116 123 for free, 24-hour help.
