London Bridge terror attack cop sacked over 'offensive' texts
Detective Constable Mark Luker was dismissed for deliberately using discriminatory language linking the Traveller community to theft in police WhatsApp messages.
- British Transport Police dismissed Detective Constable Mark Luker for gross misconduct linked to WhatsApp messages about Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people.
- Within the MSOC team chat, Luker posted deliberate messages linking the Irish Traveller community to theft, joking about 'scrap metal, lead roofing and cable'.
- On 31 December 2024, Mr Luker wrote, `Was this a raffle on a certain kind of site?` and added, `You are the MSOC pikey liaison.` On 17 March 2025, he joked about scrap metal and on 27 March 2025 used the slur pikey.
- The misconduct panel states that Luker probably knew the language was offensive and ruled it gross misconduct, describing the word 'dags' as derogatory, referencing a scene in Snatch, while accepting he is not 'inherently racist'.
- In his defence to the panel, Mr Luker said he was one of the first responders to the 2017 London Bridge terror attack and that humour helps him cope, adding he did not intend the word 'pikey' to be offensive.
