Liverpool Lose to Fenerbahce
Liverpool conceded three set-piece goals as Fenerbahce handed the Reds their first Champions League defeat of the season.
On Wednesday, Liverpool fell to a 3-2 defeat against Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League, marking the Premier League side's first loss of the campaign.
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola attributed the loss to defensive failures on three set-pieces, stating, "We concede from a free-kick, a corner and even from the long throw."
Trey Nyoni opened the scoring in the 25th minute, Mason Greenwood leveled via free-kick, and Alexander Isak restored Liverpool's lead in the 69th minute before Vedat Muriqi's 79th-minute winner secured victory for Fenerbahce.
Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas said after the match, "Congratulations to Fenerbahce, they deserve it," acknowledging the team's defensive lapses after scoring.
Despite the result, 19-year-old Nyoni was the outstanding player in Istanbul; the defeat drops Liverpool to eighth in the league phase standings with nine points.
