When Lithuania declared independence in January 1991, more Soviet monuments fell. Crowds of Vilnius residents applauded the removal of Lenin's image from Lukiškės Square, and monuments to Vilnius' pseudo-liberator, General Ivan Chernyakhovsky, also collapsed onto the pavement.
