Liechtenstein lawmakers on Wednesday approved a citizens' initiative legalizing abortion during the first three months of pregnancy. Hereditary Prince Alois, who holds veto power, has already expressed his opposition. Abortion is illegal in the principality except in exceptional circumstances, under penalty of imprisonment, and a referendum on the issue failed in 2011.
The elected representatives of the Landtag voted by a short majority on Wednesday in favour of this process, which has gathered a large number of signatures. The regent of the principality, Prince Aloïs, opposed to the initiative, has a veto right.
