Lidl to Open More than 50 Stores Creating Close to 2,000 Jobs
The supermarket chain said the expansion will create close to 2,000 jobs as it targets new freehold and leasehold sites across Britain.
- Lidl, the sixth-largest supermarket chain in Britain, announced a £600 million investment plan to open more than 50 new stores over the next 12 months, creating close to 2,000 jobs.
- The expansion follows a record-breaking Christmas for the discounter, which reported a 10% sales surge; nearly 51 million customers shopped at the chain's locations across Great Britain during the festive period.
- Currently operating more than 1,000 stores with more than 35,000 workers, the chain will launch new sites this summer, including Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire.
- Employment Minister Kate Dearden welcomed the investment, stating the company creates "thousands of good jobs," while Ryan McDonnell, chief executive of Lidl, said the expansion aims to positively impact British communities.
- Management will host more than 150 property partners and agents later this month to share future growth plans, targeting new freehold and leasehold properties across Great Britain.
