Lidl Begins Building Its First Pub at Site in Dundonald, Northern Ireland
The project will add 8 permanent jobs and let shoppers buy Lidl’s beer, wine and spirits after licensing restrictions blocked a standard off-licence.
- On Thursday, Lidl Northern Ireland confirmed construction has begun on its first-ever public house in Dundonald, located adjacent to its existing supermarket. The development aims to provide customers access to the retailer's full range of beer, wine, and spirits.
- Northern Ireland's strict licensing regulations forced this strategy after Lidl failed to secure a standard off-sales license. To qualify, the retailer had to pass an "inadequacy" test and acquire a license "surrendered" by a closing business.
- Built by MMG Contracts, the 84 sqm premises will accommodate up to 60 customers in a separate building. Construction currently supports 15 jobs, with eight additional permanent positions expected when the pub opens this summer.
- Regional Managing Director Gordon Cruikshanks stated the project reflects long-term commitment to Dundonald, which has experienced a population boost of more than 20% in recent years. Shoppers will soon access award-winning local and international spirits.
- Lidl does not plan to expand this model globally, as these unique local circumstances do not apply to the retailer's 13,000 stores worldwide. The Dundonald project remains a specific solution to regional regulatory hurdles rather than a broad strategy shift.
