- Natalie Pasquenza, CEO of Children's Advocacy Centers of Kentucky, and Ashley DeJarnette, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC at the University of Kentucky, report that 100 of Kentucky's 120 counties lack SANE-ready hospitals, leaving geography as destiny for vulnerable children.
- Data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System shows Kentucky's child sexual abuse cases rose from 4.1% of the national total in 2020 to 10.1% in 2024, worsening disparities where 44 counties lack nearby access.
- Currently, only 86 pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners practice statewide, insufficient to cover 99 acute and critical access hospitals; becoming a Pediatric SANE requires an RN license and 40 hours of certification training.
- Without a SANE available, survivors often receive care from providers lacking specific training, resulting in missed evidence critical for prosecution, inadequate treatment, and fragmented follow-up care after leaving the emergency department.
- To address these gaps, a statewide SANE coordinator role is in development, with collaboration across the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, the Kentucky Hospital Association, the Kentucky Board of Nursing, and the Sexual Assault Response Team Advisory Committee.
