ICRIR: Troubles Group Investigates 1981 Deaths of Father and Son
The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery seeks witnesses to the 1981 attack that killed Eric and Desmond Guiney during Belfast rioting linked to hunger strikes.
- The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery has launched a witness appeal at the Guiney family's request after Eric Guiney, 45-year-old milkman, and his son Desmond, 14-year-old, died in an attack on their milk lorry on May 5 1981.
- The morning after Bobby Sands' death, rioting broke out in north Belfast, and stone throwers struck the milk float on the Antrim Road during the 1981 hunger strikes.
- The milk lorry struck a concrete lamp post at the junction with Duncairn Avenue opposite the New Lodge Road; Desmond Guiney died three days later and Eric Guiney on May 13th, after his son's funeral.
- ICRIR said it will distribute posters and organise a leaflet drop in the area and Assistant Commissioner Amanda Logan urged the north Belfast public to come forward, promising strict confidentiality.
- Earlier this year the UK and Irish governments agreed new legacy arrangements, and legislation will replace the ICRIR with two bodies while transferring around 100 investigations involving about 200 deaths to the new Legacy Commission.
