Leeds Set for £200m Upgrade as Funding Confirmed
The project adds three entrances, a new overbridge and nearly 40% more ticket barriers to ease overcrowding and support future passenger growth.
On Wednesday, the government announced an additional £200 million for Leeds Station, bringing total investment to more than £300 million with upgrades due by 2030.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin described the station as "totally overcrowded," currently serving more than 27 million passengers annually and expected to reach 50 million within 15 years.
The project includes three new entrances and a central overbridge, with nearly 40% more ticket barriers installed to improve passenger flow and an extension to Platform 14.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the improvements support the £11 billion Transpennine Route Upgrade, which aims to boost passenger capacity by 30% and electrify key northern routes.
These works form part of broader ambitions for Northern Powerhouse Rail, designed to improve connections between major northern cities through more frequent services and shorter travel times.
