HD HHI Launches Third KDX-III Batch-II Destroyer for ROK Navy
The launch completes South Korea’s six-ship Aegis destroyer fleet and underscores President Lee Jae-myung’s push for self-reliant national defense.
- On Wednesday, President Lee Jae-myung attended the launching ceremony for the ROKS Daeho Kim Jong-seo at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan shipyard, completing South Korea's six-ship Aegis destroyer fleet.
- Built under the Gwanggaeto-III Batch-II project, the 8,200-ton destroyer underscores Seoul's push for self-reliant national defense. "When we can defend ourselves on our own, we can determine our future," Lee said.
- The Daeho Kim Jong-seo measures 170 meters in length and 21 meters in beam, capable of reaching 30 knots, or approximately 55 kilometers per hour, while featuring advanced integrated sonar and ballistic missile interception capabilities.
- Following sea trials, the ship will be delivered to the Navy in December next year, completing a fleet of three Sejong the Great-class and three Jeongjo the Great-class Aegis destroyers.
- President Lee pledged to support the shipbuilding industry's exports while maintaining a "super gap" in technological capabilities, as the administration plans to add nuclear-powered submarines and manned-unmanned teaming carriers.
