Ledger confirms hardware wallet spy implant behind crypto thefts

Researchers say the implant can read 24-word recovery phrases during setup and transmit them over cellular data, raising concerns about wallet-draining thefts.

  • Ledger unveiled the Atom, an Android-based security device, as the company works to address supply-chain breaches that forced recent sales pauses across key markets.
  • Following a supply-chain breach involving Malaysian distributor CryptoBilis, the company halted sales across Southeast Asia after resellers sold devices with "an unauthorized hardware implant" designed to intercept users' 24-word recovery phrases.
  • To counter such attacks, the Atom incorporates a protective enclosure surrounding the Secure Element and MCU, specifically designed to block the screen reader implants used in the recent incident.
  • Researchers documented losses reaching up to $93.2 million across more than 300 compromised wallets, prompting Tether to freeze $10 million in its USDT stablecoin tied to the theft.
  • Scheduled for mid-2027 release, the device runs on both Android OS and Ledger OS, allowing users to switch between everyday smartphone functions and a secure environment for crypto transactions.
