LeBlanc says job 'not yet done' after meeting with Greer, Lutnick
Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington on Monday, continuing urgent negotiations to avoid 50 per cent U.S. tariffs set for Wednesday.
President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent levies on $28 billion in Canadian goods, citing provincial bans on American alcohol, the supply-managed dairy system, and quotas on U.S. vehicles.
With 60 per cent of Canadian honey exports bound for the United States, the Canadian Beekeepers Federation warned the tariffs could devastate the industry and force farms into bankruptcy.
Following the high-stakes talks, LeBlanc said, "Our job is not yet done," as officials work to secure a deal before Wednesday's deadline, though briefing reports suggest the two sides remain far apart.
Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to propose a $50 billion generational investment in Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec hydro and wind projects to Trump, creating an estimated 23,000 jobs.
