Lebanon Says Israeli Troops Infiltrated Lebanese Army-Held Village
Lebanese officials called the move a violation of a US-sponsored agreement as about 50 families had returned to the village.
- Israeli troops infiltrated the Lebanese village of Zawtar al-Gharbiya overnight Friday and erected an earthen barrier near the town square, according to Lebanon's state media and local officials.
- Zawtar al-Gharbiya was designated as one of two 'pilot zones' under a US-sponsored framework agreement signed with Israel in June, where the Lebanese army assumed control to facilitate a phased Israeli withdrawal.
- Mayor Abed Ezzeddine said residents were surprised to discover the barrier, located around 100 metres from the town square, while an AFP correspondent confirmed it blocked the village's eastern entrance.
- A Lebanese military source called the move a violation of the framework accord, but the Israeli military told AFP it was 'not aware of such an event in this area' when contacted.
- The incident follows Thursday's seventh round of US-mediated talks in Rome, occurring as Israeli forces continue to occupy broad bands of southern territory despite the June ceasefire and deployment efforts.
