Law enforcement urges motorcycle safety following 2 Harrison County wrecks this week
Officials say 2025 saw 175 fewer crashes but 8 more deaths, as Kentucky promotes training and blind-spot awareness for riders and drivers.
- In observance of May as Bike Safety Awareness Month, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Office of Highway Safety is urging drivers to look twice and share the road to prevent crashes and injuries.
- While motorcycles and bicycles have the right to use most roadways, they are typically smaller than other vehicles and may be in larger vehicles' blind spots. Drivers must remain alert during turns and lane changes.
- During 2025, Kentucky recorded 175 fewer crashes, a 10.5 percent decrease, and 143 fewer injuries, an 11.6 percent decrease. Bicycle crashes totaled 465, resulting in 305 injuries and 10 fatalities.
- Administered by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Office of Highway Safety, the RideSmartKY program operates 11 training centers across Kentucky. Successful course completion waives the written and skills tests required for motorcycle endorsement.
- Transportation Secretary Rebecca Goodman stated, "Looking twice and knowing who is near you can save a life." Gov. Andy Beshear added, "Let's all do our part to make our roads safer.
