Latin America accounted for 85% of environmental defender killings in 2025, report says

  • A report released Wednesday by advocacy group Global Witness documented at least 124 killings of land and environmental defenders worldwide last year, with Latin America accounting for 85% of the deaths.
  • Land disputes were linked to 84 killings, more than half the global total, as Global Witness identified suspected links to organized crime in 17 cases and five to contract killers.
  • Colombia remained the deadliest country for the fourth consecutive year with 39 killings, while Brazil saw deaths more than double to 26, accounting for 52% of all killings documented globally.
  • Indigenous people and small-scale farmers bore the brunt, comprising more than three-quarters of those killed, including seven members of Indigenous Guard community patrol systems protecting their territories.
  • Global Witness cautioned that killings remain significantly underreported as land disputes and organized crime converge, though Brazil's Ministry of Indigenous Peoples emphasized that reducing violence requires securing territories and combating illegal activities.
