- On Tuesday, Kilauea volcano at Halemaʻumaʻu crater resumed eruptive activity with fountains about 400 feet high in its 37th episode since last December, confined to the summit caldera inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
- Magma carrying dissolved gases is rising through narrow, pipelike vents, driving tall lava fountains; past episodes produced incandescent lava fountains over 1,000 feet and plumes up to 20,000 feet.
- Sporadic spattering began Friday, alternating between the north vent and south vent, with most Kilauea lava fountaining episodes since Dec. 23, 2024, lasting about a day or less.
- As one of six active Hawaiian volcanoes, Kilauea sits on Hawaii Island about 200 miles south of Honolulu and remains closely monitored.
- Following short pauses, new fountaining episodes have recurred, with Episode 37 beginning at approximately 9:27 a.m. on December 23, 2024.
