Laser Made Muons at ELI NP Photograph Lead Blocks Through Six Feet of Concrete

Summary by techeblog.com
Cosmic rays have been running a slow version of this experiment for as long as air has been thick enough to hit. A fast proton from space strikes a molecule high overhead, the collision throws off short-lived fragments, and some of those fragments decay into muons. A muon behaves a lot like an electron, except [...]

A team of physicists tested what would be the most powerful laser in the world, one that would surpass Superman’s. A particle beam was generated to obtain images of an object by concrete.

Myons are among the most pervasive particles that physicists measure routinely. They arise when cosmic radiation hits the atmosphere, and they cross through concrete, steel, and several hundred meters of rock on their way to the ground. The muography uses this property: it measures how much an object weakens the muon's current, and calculates the density inside it. The hook lies in the source. The natural muon's current is weak, and those who wo…

Physicists have used a laser to create an image of lead blocks behind a two-meter-thick concrete wall. To do so, they used the 10-petawatt laser at the Romanian research center ELI-NP, the most powerful on Earth.

For the first time, researchers have looked through a two metre thick concrete wall with a laser-controlled muon beam. The technology tested in Romania makes lead blocks visible, which remain hidden for conventional X-ray radiation. (Continue reading)

A myon beam produced with a high-performance laser has made a dense lead body visible as a translucent image in a laboratory test. The particles crossed through strong shields and were detected at a distance of up to 42 meters from the origin site. The not yet examined attempt thus shows a possible way to controlable muon sources for faster muography. Măgurele (Romania). Myons can be thick [...] The article Laser-generated muons have illuminated…
