The President of Kazakhstan, Kasim-Jomart Tokaev, signed a decree adopting the country's new Constitution at a solemn ceremony at his residence in Astana, reporting to Orda.kz on 17 March.
Kazakh citizens approved the country's new constitution in a referendum over the weekend, which could offer current President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev the opportunity to extend his term.

Citizens of Kazakhstan voted for a new constitution. According to preliminary results turnout was over 70% and 90% of votes supported the constitution. The new basic document expands presidential power, introduces post of vice-president and reforms the parliament.
More powers for Head of State Tokayev, less control by Parliament: in a referendum far-reaching constitutional amendments were approved by a clear majority.
