Larger Package of Tax Measures in Budget than Expected
Families are expected to save more than €1,000 a year per child, with the cap set to begin in September 2027.
Finance Minister Simon Harris and Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers will announce an €8.65bn budget package in the Dail on Tuesday, comprising €7bn in new spending measures and €1.65bn in tax changes.
Protracted negotiations between government departments preceded the final agreement, as Chambers insisted on a 6 per cent spending increase ceiling across government to manage mounting service costs.
Families will benefit from a €550 monthly childcare fee cap, while middle earners see relief through a €2,500 increase in the 40 per cent tax rate threshold, now set at €46,500.
Pensioners and welfare recipients will receive a €10 weekly increase, while the government extended excise duty cuts on petrol and diesel through February to address ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
A new €500 disability support payment is included as the state manages a €6.9bn surplus, though officials face criticism for avoiding universal energy credits despite strong fiscal position.
