Constellation, Amazon Sign 20-Year Power Deal to Support Maryland Nuclear Plant
The deal will fund $3 billion in upgrades and help Constellation seek another 20 years of operating licenses.
Constellation Energy and Amazon announced a 20-year power purchase agreement on Wednesday to support the expansion and relicensing of the Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant in Maryland.
Addressing increasing demand for nuclear energy from technology companies seeking power for AI-driven computing, the deal provides Constellation the revenue certainty needed to relicense Calvert Cliffs for another 20 years.
Amazon's funding pledge enables $3 billion in infrastructure investments, including 690 megawatts of power and approximately 190 megawatts of additional emissions-free generating capacity coming online between 2030 and 2032.
All electricity generated will flow onto the regional grid for all customers rather than directly to Amazon, David Dardis, Constellation's senior executive vice president and chief external affairs and growth officer, said.
Constellation plans to evaluate new small modular nuclear reactors at the site, building on previous long-term power purchase agreements the company secured earlier this year with Walmart and Meta.
