Ice Block Falls Through Homeowner's Roof in Los Angeles County

Hahn says the FAA should investigate how the ice fell and whether aircraft debris caused the damage after a tenant heard an explosion.

  • Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn requested a federal investigation Tuesday after a large chunk of ice crashed through the roof of a Whittier home. Hahn urged the Federal Aviation Administration to determine the debris's source.
  • The incident occurred Friday, April 10, when resident Yudar Grau heard an explosion and discovered ice inside his accessory dwelling unit. Homeowner Thania Magana noted a foul smell from the fragments, which punched a large hole through the ceiling.
  • Flight data showed an aircraft passing directly overhead at the time, prompting Magana to suspect the ice originated from a plane. "We are lucky that Yuder was not in his living room when this block of ice crashed through his ceiling," she said.
  • Following the report, FAA Acting Regional Administrator Chris Rocheleau is reviewing a request for a "thorough and timely investigation." The agency routinely reviews reports alleging debris fell from aircraft.
  • Concerns remain regarding aviation safety, as the ice could have resulted from aircraft waste leakage or rare weather phenomena called megacryometeors. "While such incidents are rare, the potential consequences are extremely serious," Hahn wrote in her letter.
